Struggle to Define Oneself Politically

I am neither a Republican nor a Democrat. Most people I know would describe me as a Republican, but I certainly do not fit the standard “conservative” mold. If anything, I am most likely fiscally conservative and socially liberal. But why do people like to be boxed in? I have opinions all over the map that make both “sides” upset:

Global Warming? You gotta be kidding me.
Abortion Rights? The more the better.
Low taxes for everyone? Heck yeah.
Gay rights? Absolutely.
Unions? The fewer the better.
God? I will believe it when I see it.
Globalism? What part of that question is a choice?
Immigration? It is what makes America great - bring it on.
Evolution? It is what it is and those who don’t believe or understand it will go extinct.
Death Penalty? For it, but there are complex economic issues surrounding it.
Gay Marriage? I don’t “get” marriage, but I don’t care to stand in anyone’s way - gay or straight.
Oil? Drill Drill Drill

Define those attributes as either Republican or Democrat. You find the subject area and I probably will confound you as to my real opinions. This next statement will bring a wave of ire onto me… When mingling with either Dems or ‘publicans, I do have to say that Republicans are more accepting of my views. How strange is that? I can sit with a group of self labeled liberals and tick off a list of things that I agree with them about, but as soon as I disagree with the so called “liberal agenda” - then I am suddenly a Republican. Not just a republican, but an evil Bush loving republican that. Curious how the very people who claim to be most open to new ideas are least likely to respect independent thought. It is very frustrating.

    Political compass check it out.
You seem to be a libertarian. AKA get the government outta my life type of person. good for you.

@Ben - there are times I short circuit the conversation by saying “Libertarian,” but the point I was making is that people always want to label people and Libertarian is just another label.
